Education as a means of socio-cultural and physical development generates ample opportunities for all individuals to flourish and build an equitable and just society. With this mission, GERIATRIC WELFARE CHARITABLE TRUSTstarted its journey in education for access and enrollment of out of school children by opening Non-Formal Education centers in Banki and Gop blocks of Cuttack and Puri district respectively. Around 5000 children of 6-14 years age could avail school education through this programme in 1988. This empirical knowledge and deep interest promoted GERIATRIC WELFARE CHARITABLE TRUSTto develop contextualized reading and writing materials for children and instructors; building capacity of instructors.

In 1989, GERIATRIC WELFARE CHARITABLE TRUSTopened learning centers in six slums in Bhubaneswar and piloted early childhood education materials such as teachers’ handbook, day wise workbook for learners and child friendly poems and rhymes. Along with such innovations, materials for remedial coaching of primary school children were also developed. However, in 1992 experience in Alternative and Innovative Education (AIE) in Baliguda and G Udaygiri blocks of Fulbani district added another experience of community mobilization for education and documentation of good practices on centre management, child friendly classroom transaction and tracking of individual child learning progress. Continuous involvement of education team in teaching-learning material development, capacity building of community stake holders and teachers of various subjects has deepen the perspective building of team towards teacher education in particular and school education in general. Strong advocacy initiatives of the team have resulted in replication of different innovative practices in many schools.

The rigorous efforts of engagement with the community, children and facilitators and teachers resulted in a systematic community-led monitoring system of Early Childhood Education (ECE) as well as Elementary Education. Implementation of both pictorial and multi-lingual learning materials (Kui-Desia-Odia), (Munda-Sundargadi-Odia) and (Santali-Odia); good practices on centre management, comprehensive package for capacity building of Anagawadi Workers and Supervisors School teachers; capacity building of PRI members and strengthening Education Watch Groups, Matru Mandal Committees, Jancha Committees, School Management Committees (SMCs), School Management and Development Committees (SMCs) and Child Peer Groups to monitor .

Thus, all the efforts of GERIATRIC WELFARE CHARITABLE TRUSTorganisation round its core values to ensure transparent, gender-sensitive, accountable and democratic governance expanding the educational opportunities, enhancing the quality of education and building the capacity of all stake holders
