Water & Sanitation

Access to safe drinking water and a healthy living environment are overarching goals that shape Shakti’s development programmes. Most of the rural communities lack accesses to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities are therefore more prone to disease and thus unable to defeat the cycle of poverty. Our interventions focus on creating safe water supplies, sanitation facilities and hygiene-related education for rural villagers of our operational area.

Shakti mobilizes, educates and trains communities on how to construct, manage and maintain their own water and sanitation facilities. As part of the programme, the community pools resources to voluntarily contribute 10% of the project estimate by supplying locally available construction materials and contributing labour. This programme awakens the community’s ability to independently sustain their own Water and Sanitation Network through cooperative contribution and management systems.

Shakti has completed water supply projects in remote villages Phuldumer, Tadijhola, Hadaguda, Khemundipadar in Lanjigarh Block using gravity flow piped water supply technology. It has also taken smaller interventions to construct water tank systems at the source of natural fountain /stream in Podapadar, Kantamal, Jhulukaguda, Sindhurghati, Adatakiri, Kuliapadar and Dalguma. These all helped people get safe drinking water.

From a sanitation perspective, Shakti renovated 39 old and dilapidated Tube Well Platforms.  As an innovation measure we constructed 26 community utensil cleaning platforms near to the Tube Well Platforms.
